I received this message in my inbox this past week from MP Tamara Jansen, one of the vice-chairs of the AMAD committee, and wanted to share it with my readers. I’ve copied it directly from MP Jansen’s email, since there’s nothing I could add to make it any better or clearer. I hope she won’t mind!
| The Final Push for Bill C-218 |
Dear Patricia, We are entering a critical few weeks for Bill C-218, the Right to Recover Act. The bill would make permanent the exclusion of mental disorder as the sole underlying medical condition for medical assistance in dying (MAiD). |
Two important dates are coming up:
Wednesday, September 23 | 5:30–6:30 p.m. ET
The House of Commons is scheduled to hold the second hour of debate at Second Reading.
Wednesday, October 7
The Second Reading vote is anticipated to take place. If the bill passes, it will move forward to committee for further study.
We need your help
The next few weeks are an important opportunity to make sure MPs across Canada hear from Canadians who support Bill C-218.
Here are some ways you can take action:

- Email or write to your Member of Parliament and ask them to vote YES on Bill C-218. 👉Find Your MP

- Talk to your friends and family about what is at stake.
- Mobilize your church, faith community, community organization or other local groups and encourage their members to contact MPs as well.
The message is simple:
Parliament must act before the scheduled expansion of MAiD for mental illness. [The scheduled date is March 2027]. Tell your MP: Vote YES on Bill C-218.
Every phone call, email, letter and conversation helps demonstrate the strength of support for protecting the right to treatment, recovery and hope.
